So my education in all things web related continues at a pleasing pace. Some days I progress better than others, but on the whole I’m feeling ever more confident. The key for me to problem solving and the ability to think clearly when faced with a seemingly intractable hurdle.

An alternative to the CSS frameworks
So I’ve used both Bootstrap and Foundation on a regular basis. Both frameworks are easy to work with and offer both real assistance and flexibility when building websites. But I’ve been looking around for a lighter grid system and this weekend, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with the Responsive Grid System.
Sleeping easy with a clear desktop
My mother has the view that cleaning the house is ‘therapeutic’. I run a pretty clean and ordered flat, but I can’t claim getting busy scrubbing the dishes and hovering my carpet gives me such a feeling of wellbeing. That was until I spent a few hours decluttering my desktop.
The joys of Git and GitHub
Okay, so I’ve heard for sometime now at the various networking events I attend that Github is the best thing since sliced bread. I’m behind the times here but belatedly, I’m jumped on the bandwagon. And now I know why the geeks rave so much about Github.
A point to deny Spurs the title?
I’m as small-minded as the next football fan. No, I’m more small-minded than any other football fan. Following defeat to Swansea, on the back of our feeble performance at Old Trafford, I’ve accepted we won’t be winning the league. That’s fine, I can cope with it. But I just can’t cope with Spurs winning the league.
A need to get back cycling to work
Just finished reading Emily Chapman’s endearing and revealing account of her time navigating London’s streets as a cycling courier. ‘Coming Around Again’ was a great read. The irony of enjoying the book while riding cattle class on the tube was not lost on me.
A welcome return to the league
This blog emerged from a fantastic day at Wembley last May, so I’m hardly going to completely disparage the FA Cup. But I’ve been counting down the days to the return of the League since the Leicester game.
My first visit to see Arsenal on Sunday
I guess for a blog, primarily based on my views supporting Arsenal, it will seem a little odd that I’ve waited until mid-February to attend my first game.
It’s many years (back to my early teenage years), since I last waited until seven months before attending my first home game. There’s no specific reason why it’s taken so long. I still go to the pub to watch the big games and watch all the other games at home. Have I missed attending the games?? Not particularly. I must admit I miss the pre-match beers a great deal. That sense of anticipation. But once the game starts, I actually enjoy watching the game either in the pub or at home.
The trails of being a freelancer
Been a busy few weeks. I guess that my time since xmas has demonstrated the downsides to working as a freelancer.
It’s not a case of business being quiet. I’m pleased to say that clients appear to have a steady stream of work that requires my input. January (and August for that matter) tend to be slow for the contract workers. But increasingly many companies hit the ground running following the xmas season (in much the same way that downing tools in mid December is no longer the norm; work deadlines appear to extend right up until the final day before the festive break).
‘Controlling complexity is the essence of computer programming.’
This is a great quote by Brian Kernigan. The deeper I delve into web development, the harder it is to keep my workflow simple and my code easier to maintain. The quote is ever more relevant after a day studying JavaScript.
