This is a great quote by Brian Kernigan. The deeper I delve into web development, the harder it is to keep my workflow simple and my code easier to maintain. The quote is ever more relevant after a day studying JavaScript.
So over the xmas period, I was productive in deepening my knowledge of sass, git and github. While it’s daunting at times to face the prospect of learning so much stuff in the field of web development, it’s great to move on to another area to learn.
I’ve spent time in the past learning JavaScript and I’m enjoying returning to learn JS, as well as jQuery. I sensed I would be stimulated and challenged by the prospect of learning a programming language. As a self-taught designer, I was never a big ‘ideas’ person. I was often in awe of my designers at Gungho Design, when they could come up with concepts and ideas to form what I called ‘the bigger picture’. I was always more of a creative artworker than a designer. I think you need to be aware of your limitations, as well as your strengths. My style was more methodical and organised in my approach to my work. I greatly enjoyed working with the designers in bringing their ideas to life. My technical knowledge of using the software was often far ahead of my designers as well as my attention to detail.
So I guess my journey into coding was a natural progression of my career as I faced new challenges. My time as Studio Head at Gungho Design was greatly rewarding and I was always mindful of shortcomings, as well as my strengths. I sense going forward into my web development career, my role at Gungho Design will stand me good stead. I’ll always be aware of the bigger picture in working on a large project, and not get too lost in the detail, as the expense of the ultimate goal of delivering for the client.
So, I’m enjoying the return to the world of functions, objects, loops and variables. I’ll leave the big ideas to those who can deliver and focus on building on my strengths and minimise the downsides of my weaknesses.
