Frameworks and grids

CSS Framework

Okay, so I’ve been hyper-busy checking out all kinds of templates to help me build my web pages. Bootstrap, Skeleton, Pure, Toast, Kube and Foundation has taken up far too much of my time. I’ve finally decided on the latter and I love all that Foundation offers.

Up until now, I’ve actually not used any framework to assist me. The sites which I’ve coded have been pretty simple and I’ve just floated elements when required. Probably not the wisest workflow, but it has given me a really good feel for dealing with the box model and the perils of floating boxes on a page. It’s been a valuable education. Now I’ve seen the real benefit of using Foundation, I feel I can build prototype web pages relatively quickly.

I guess there is the danger that websites can look very similar and your CSS file size can be bloated. But the joy of using Foundation’s inbuilt JS capabilities has been an eye-opener. The media queries are simple and easy to understand and it’s relatively straight forward to overwrite their CSS classes. The Block Grid is great to work with and using their navigation and slider tools are very welcome. I have not doubt many clients will in time demand more bespoke tools, but for now, working with Foundation will be good for my web development.
