Happy New Year to you all

xmas as a designer

I’ve been guilty of neglecting my blog and while I’m not a great fan of new year resolutions, I will vow to keep you updated on what amuses and delights me.

You’re probably thinking I was busy due to starting my xmas parties early in December and Arsenal’s table topping form has ensured the celebrations have continued into the new year. Well I guess that’s partly true. People seem to think that being a freelancer, you miss out on a lot of the staff xmas celebrations. The view is that freelancers are quickly forgotten when invites are the sole preserve of permament members of staff. I guess this is true of many places, and this probably includes a number of my clients.

However, I was invited to a few parties and I was happy to accept such hospitality. It could be argued I was the grateful recipient of a number of ‘free passes’. I could trot along to the venue, enjoy the free booze and get hammered, make a foot of yourself, and not face the intense embarrassment of reaching the your desk the following day. I guess I did over indulge and I did reveal to the occasional Creative Director of his and the company’s shortcomings as i ordered another large JD and Coke. But on the whole, I was pretty much well behaved. No questioning emails were sent to me, and hopefully, I haven’t jeopardised my chances of future assignments with my the clients.

Generally, I’ve been pretty productive over the festive period. I’m acutely aware of just how much I need to learn about all things web development. I have learnt how to use SASS and it’s been just short of a revelation. I took to it instantly and it’s cleaned up my CSS significantly. The use of variables, partials and mixins will become a regular part of my workflow. I’m sure there is lots more to come with SASS. I look forward to working with lists and operations a great deal more in the future. Additionally, the command line no longer holds any great fears for me. Using it makes me feel like a proper developer….! I’ve also increased my familiarity with Github and look forward to posting my code very shortly.
